Alan Johnson
CHA Chair
Alan has been involved in various community based housing projects for over 20 years. He is a trustee of the Auckland Housing Association and a founding shareholder in Habitat for Humanity Manukau. Alan works for the The Salvation Army in the Army’s Social Policy and Parliamentary Unit as a social policy analyst. He has an academic background in town planning and economics and grew up and lives in South Auckland where he is active in a variety of community projects. |
Keith Preston
CHA Vice-Chair
Keith lives in Nelson and is a trustee of the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust and a NZ branch committee member of the Australasian Housing Institute. As a member of the NHT, Keith helps provide affordable homes for local people, organises a home insulation service ‘Healthier Homes’ and coordinates interim and emergency housing. Over the last four years his company Sustainability Ltd. has been helping community housing groups to become established and worked with local councils on affordable housing solutions. Keith’s interest in housing comes from 30 years of working with community housing organisations in England. |
Andrew Wilson
Treasurer
Andrew is general manager for the community housing portfolio of IHC New Zealand Inc. The portfolio includes 850 houses which provide accommodation for 3,000 people with intellectual disabilities. With a background as a consulting engineer, Andrew subsequently worked in senior management roles for Standards New Zealand, including interim chief executive. He was awarded a NZ 1990 medal of community service. |
Tiopira Rauna
Members of the Aotearoa Maori Housing Coalition, chaired by Tiopira, have completed 92 apartments in Wellington; have government/private contracts in Auckland; and a contract in Papua New Guinea to build a hotel, a village housing subdivision, school, hospital, farm buildings, wharf, forestry and fisheries facilities. Tiopira has served on a number of Maori boards since 1984 involved in health, fisheries, forestry, trade, investment. His iwi affiliations are Ngati Kahungunu, Te Aitanga a Mahaki, Rongowhakaata, Ngai Tamanuhiri, Ngati Porou, Te Whakatohea, Ngati Whare, Ngati Raukawa, and Te Whanau a Apanui. He has a commerce degree and is completing a masters degree in communications. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Tiopira is one of the three Maori caucus members. |
Sheryl Connell
Sheryl is a Practicing Lawyer, a Judicial Officer in the Disputes Tribunal and Social Advocate for disadvantaged communities. She has worked with several Maori Trusts in response to their whenua needs in terms of development of the land, Commercial opportunities and Maori Land Court issues. For instance, over several years the Houhanga Rongo Trust has maintained community housing for the needs of disadvantaged communities in Otara. Sheryl has worked with homeless Whanau, engaged with housing agencies and negotiated agreements that have met housing needs for families, and has been instrumental in sharing the project management of a Marae building project for whanau/hapu. In her professional capacity Sheryl has project managed subdivisions, has personally built two homes, qualified as a Real Estate Agent, and been a director of a design company. Sheryl is one of the three Maori caucus members. |
Vicky George

Vicky has over ten years of experience working with local organisations and community based projects and research development studies. Vicky is the Project Feasibility and Management Consultant for Vickara Solutions. Her work with Vickara Solutions provides consultancy work and services to community organisations specialising on the cultural, social, educational and economic factors of projects. This year Vicky focused her research studies on Maori-Crown relationships in Housing as partial fulfilment to the completion of her Masters Degree with the University of Auckland. Vicky is one of three Maori Caucus members.

Annette Sutherland
Annette’s career has included a fair measure of tenant advocacy. She started off as an English teacher and spent some time tutoring Feminist studies at University. From there she went on to Benefit & Tenancy advocacy through Community Law Services and the Tenant Protection Association. For the last 10 years she has worked with Comcare in evolving their services in Housing Facilitation from both a tenancy and landlord perspective. |
Lisa Woolley
Lisa Woolley is the CEO of VisionWest Community Trust (formerly the Friendship Centre Trust) and has been working with community organisations for most of her working life. VisionWest Community Trust Provides both Emergency Housing and Long Term Supported housing for people in Waitakere as well as offering a range of wrap around social support services. Lisa has a Graduate Diploma in Not for Profit Management and is currently studying towards a Masters in Social Practice, with a Thesis that will be focussed on housing support for vulnerable people. |
Scott Figenshow
Scott brings 20 years of experience in the community housing sector, and is still passionate about housing as part of a holistic approach to community development. Since 2005 Scott has served as Senior Policy Analyst-Housing for the Queenstown Lakes District Council, and also serves as Executive Advisor to the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust. Holding advanced degrees in planning and housing finance, Scott has also served in Southern California as the Executive Director of a non-profit special needs housing developer, and as a housing finance and organisational development consultant, involved in development of affordable housing over a five county area. Recent work includes finding a way to create local incentives to increase the supply of affordable housing, alongside improving the performance of homes through increased energy efficiency. |
