CHA Member Project Profile: Waimahia Inlet

Nov 12, 2014 | News

The mixed tenure community will house 282 low and below median income households. It demonstrates the strength of a community focused, collaborative approach to providing affordable rental and home ownership options.

The $120M project is the most ambitious yet undertaken by the Community Housing Sector. The aim is to create a diverse community based around affordable housing that will include social rental, shared-equity and home ownership options delivered by 7 participating community housing providers alongside private purchasers.

Special emphasis has been placed on placemaking and community focused initiatives with 25% assigned as green space in pocket parks and a waterfront esplanade. Covenants require membership of a Residents’ Association and with the level of wrap-around services the Community Housing Sector is renowned for, the neighbourhood is promising to be safe, vibrant and family-friendly.

Building is well underway with several families already moving into their new homes.

“The development partnership demonstrates that not-for-profit organisations can operate in a highly professional way and match commercial entities for drive, focus and outcomes. We have brought together a mix of skills and experience to create an organisation that is capable of undertaking this development programme, capable of operating at this scale, capable of delivering outcomes to the Government on time and with prudent stewardship of funds.”
