Dwell Housing Trust in the media

Community Housing Aotearoa – Letter to the editor 23 June 2016

Dear editor

Alison Cadman, in her 18 June article, is right when she says what we need is a discussion about the wider issues of lack of funding for support services for vulnerable tenants and to build more affordable homes for these tenants.

Providing support to high-needs people, like Dwell Housing Trust does, works best when everyone plays their part. Community housing providers, like Dwell, can only do their jobs well when they can quickly access funding to deliver replacement housing. They work hard to minimize disruptions to residents – and part of that is ensuring that mental health services do their part too.

Community housing groups go way beyond the requirements of social housing landlords – because they care. Without them there would be even more people in housing crisis. The focus on Auckland means that local needs like this seem to get deferred – and that’s not right!
