Community, iwi groups lobby to buy state houses cheap

Apr 22, 2014 | News

NZ Herald article explores the issues raised in the Community Housing Aotearoa, Auckland Community Housing Providers’ Network and Te Matapihi policy paper ‘A way forward for stock transfers’ released on 16 April 2014.

The article provides examples of how state houses can be transferred at “restricted cash flow” valuations based on their rents, on the basis that they are restricted to use as social housing for needy tenants.

Housing Minister Nick Smith told the Herald he was “open to some degree of discounting” to achieve his target of raising the community sector’s share to 20 per cent of all social housing by 2017.
