The Shift Aotearoa
The Shift Aotearoa aims to support a significant shift in both our housing expectations and experience.
Transforming our housing experience and expectations
CHA is committed to shifting the way our housing system is operating.
This starts with housing policy settings – we actively apply both a systems lens and a human rights lens to our feedback on Government policy and approaches. Beyond policy, we are considering a wide range of issues and opportunities where housing interacts with other ecosystems and wellbeing.
- We are working with Te Matapihi to develop homelessness sector services;
- we have partnered with the Peter McKenzie Project to identify opportunities to reduce child poverty through housing; and
- we link closely with the global movement The Shift and share their commitment to the human right to adequate housing and examining the increasing impact of excess capital and financialisation on housing.
We are actively exploring other avenues to shift the system.
We actively gather, review and use housing research, and we are increasingly active in convening the policy, strategy, and systems conversations required to instigate change (check out CHA’s event page for future events).
We are working with The Workshop in a broad based group focused on examining how housing is represented to New Zealanders, and how New Zealanders talk and think about housing – this leads us toward increased effort to achieve a mindset change: fundamentally shifting New Zealanders’ expectations of how our housing system should work, and how Government policy should guide that outcome.
We’ve agreed the right to a decent home and a broader human rights-based approach to housing in Aotearoa is a ready-made housing system intervention to support change. We are actively sharing and promoting the Human Rights Commission’s Framework Guidelines on the Right to a Decent Home – New Zealand’s most comprehensive home-grown description of the human right to adequate housing, and most detailed guidebook on how it should be implemented.
The Shift Aotearoa is CHA’s workstream dedicated to contributing to these systemic changes and outcomes.
