Multigenerational Housing in Aotearoa New Zealand – webinar

November 26 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Urban Advisory, Matakohe Architecture and Community Housing Aotearoa (CHA) are presenting the research findings of Understanding Key Barriers to the Delivery of Multigenerational Housing in New Zealand (2025). This research found the delivery of multigenerational housing in New Zealand is hindered by complex and interconnected barriers across five categories. At the sociohistorical level, deeply embedded societal norms, particularly the prevalent nuclear family model and a general lack of understanding about multigenerational housing, contribute to negative stereotypes and stigma. This sociohistorical context impacts policy, funding, and market dynamics, impeding the broader acceptance and development of diverse housing options, including multigenerational homes.

We acknowledge BRANZ for funding this research from the Building Research Levy. The research was undertaken by Dr Natalie Allen, Dr Kate Bryson, Dr Charmaine ‘Ilaiū Talei, Jade Kake, Greer O’Donnell and Jacqueline Paul.

You are warmly invited to join presenters Dr Natalie Allen from Urban Advisory, Jade Kake from Matakohe Architecture Urbanism, Ian Fistonich from Penina Trust and Paul Gilberd from CHA to hear their discussion on key findings of the report and next steps.

Wednesday, 26 November 12:00pm – 1:00pm.
