Salvation Army Supports Māori Housing Unit
The Salvation Army supports the appointment of the Hon Nanaia Mahuta as new Associate Minister of Housing and Urban Development (Māori Housing) and the establishment of the unit as an valuable step to addressing the housing crisis.
Salvation Army Social Policy and Parliamentary Unit Director Lt Colonel Ian Hutson says Māori are disproportionately affected by the consequences of the housing crises and having a dedicated Minister and Unit will enable there to be a greater Māori focus on the housing issues Māori are experiencing. “Māori have been significantly affected in areas such as homelessness, overcrowded housing, sub standard and unhealthy accommodation, poverty created by high rental and other housing. The Salvation Army welcomes the idea of a Unit that enables Māori to identify the specific ways they are affected by the crisis and in participating in the process of addressing them.”
