Community Housing Aotearoa briefing to incoming Minister Housing and Urban Development
Community Housing Aotearoa (CHA) confirms the community housing sector’s commitment to significantly scale-up and work towards ‘all New Zealanders well-housed’ by 2030 in our briefing paper to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Phil Twyford.
The Auditor-General published a report today looking at how well Housing New Zealand uses information to meet the needs of its tenants in its management of tenancies, maintenance of houses, and management and investment in new and existing housing.
More prefabricated units and partitions in existing homes may help with the housing crisis a research group says. Partitioning existing houses would deliver up to 180,000 new dwellings according to research by the Centre for Research, Evaluation and Social Assessment. The director of the centre, Dr Kay Saville-Smith, said 12 per cent of New Zealand's housing stock was under-used and she estimated 45,000 homes in Auckland could be partitioned.
Research carried out by CHA business unit, Community Housing Solutions Ltd, on housing demand and affordability in the Western Bay has painted a picture of declining home ownership, hardship and a rising demand for rentals by couples and people living alone. A housing action plan has been pledged after the study revealed that nearly half of Tauranga's householders would be living in rentals within the next 30 years.

Review of emergency housing occupancy/tenancy agreements
Community Housing Aotearoa (CHA) is reviewing the occupancy and tenancy agreements used by emergency and transitional housing providers to support the development of best practice in the use of these documents.

Half of New Zealand’s renters report damp or mould problems with their homes, which can have negative health implications. Tenants in a newly upgraded social housing complex complained of being cold. Sealing strips around doors and baffles in rangehoods were installed.
